This article seeks to demonstrate the relevance of the transformative paradigm in contemporary studies that encompass social issues. Its overall objective is to clarify the relevance of the transformative paradigm in studies that involve social issues, especially those that refer to power relations and social justice. The specific objectives are: 1. To present the theoretical conception of the transformative paradigm through the studies of Donna Mertens; 2. Check the relationship between the transformative paradigm and Paulo Freire's ideas on the Pedagogy of the Oppressed. The methodology adopted is based on a theoretical review of the literature. The theoretical outline is based on the conception that in studies focused on the social, the transformative paradigm is currently the most appropriate, because it refers to relations of justice and power. In the final considerations, this article proposes that this paradigm be more used in research in Brazil and Portugal. This is considered to be a scientifically relevant work, as it will seek to demonstrate that this paradigm in contemporary times can be an instrument to strengthen research involving social issues, not least because this paradigm argues that research must be related to politics, confronting social oppression and suggesting a plan for change.
